Radon

Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas that you can't see, smell, or taste. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States next to smoking.

Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It leaches through cracks in solid floors, construction joints, and walls, as well as gaps in suspended floors, around service pipes, walls, and the water supply. Radon contaminates the air you breathe and can be found all over the U.S. in any type of building, including homes, offices, and schools.

Home radon test kits can be purchased from the Environmental Health Division during regular business hours.  Short-term test kits are $5, and long-term test kits are $10.
