The City of Racine Fire Prevention Code adopts the standards of the International
Building Code. Sprinkler requirements are dictated by size of building and
types of occupancy and construction. Whether the building is new or existing,
the sprinkler code may also be imposed due to change of occupancy or if the
fire chief deems it necessary to impose the code due to the type of occupancy.
All businesses within the City of Racine are required to have a minimum of 1
fire extinguisher regardless of size or type of business. The size and type of
extinguisher may vary, however, the minimum requirement is one 2A10BC (5 pounds).
The extinguisher must be hung or placed on a shelf in a conspicuous location
with the top of the extinguisher no higher than five feet off the ground.
If the tank is no longer in use it must be removed. There are some
circumstances where removing a tank would create an unsafe condition to the
foundation, then the tank may be filled with inert material. This decision is
left to the fire department. All tanks must be removed or filled by a
state-licensed remover.

The state of Wisconsin requires a minimum of one detector per floor,

bedroom can be further than 6 feet from a detector. They are either placed on
the ceiling or on the side wall 6 inches from the ceiling. The more detectors
the better. Check the operation once a week.

Outside fireplaces and cooking appliances are allowed, as are portable
fireplaces, provided they are used in a location not hazardous to life or
property. We require a 15-foot setback from any building or property line and
recommend UL or FM approved models. Materials and fuels used in outdoor fireplaces may not include rubbish, garbage,
trash, construction waste, any material made of or coated with rubber, plastic, leather, hazardous chemical, or petroleum
based materials, or any material that produces offensive smoke or odors.
