The following tips can help you keep your home safe:
- Kick-Proof your door
- Your jamb is the weak point that will most likely fail when the door is kicked
- Use a 1 inch deadbolt and reinforced metal strike box to keep the jamb from splintering when kicked
- Use good locks
- Choose high security locks that are drill and pick hardened
- Ask your hardware store manager for assistance when choosing locks
- Secure your glass
- The use of security window film and sash locks are recommended
- Professional installation is recommended
- Place blocking bars on sliding glass doors, do not count on the lock
- Light up entry points
- Illuminate the area around windows and doors
- Mount the lights as high as possible to prevent tampering
- Light up potential hiding spots
- Use motion detector lights
- Use your landscape
- Keep tree branches away from your roof and windows.
- Plant thorny or prickly plants below windows
- Use a gravel planting bed that will make noise when an intruder walks on it
- Join or form a neighborhood watch
- It's free and it's effective
- Add a security system
- Make sure you use a sign or stickers to warn would be intruders of your security system
- Make sure your security system has a cellular or radio backup
- Be wary of door to door security companies that claim to partner with the Racine PD
